When it comes to exploring French Polynesia, overwater bungalows might be the first thing that comes to mind for many travelers. However, our quest for a more private and unique experience led us down a different path – one that invol ved the gentle sway of a catamaran under the Tahitian sun and the endless horizon of the South Pacific Ocean. In this blog, we’ll take you on our unforgettable journey with Tahiti Yacht Charters and share the highlights that made it an adventure of a lifetime.
Setting Sail from Raiatea
Our adventure began with a journey from Los Angeles to Papeete, followed by a picturesque puddle jumper flight on Air Tahiti to Raiatea. As we waited for our connecting flight in Papeete, we couldn’t help but feel the anticipation building. After a short van ride from Raiatea Airport to the port, we boarded our luxurious catamaran. Within just 20 minutes of setting sail, we found ourselves surrounded by the enchanting beauty of French Polynesia.
The Allure of French Polynesia’s Natural Ocean
One of the most captivating aspects of French Polynesia is its pristine, untouched ocean. The coral reefs here are situated far from the shores, allowing the waves to break far out at sea. This unique geography creates breathtaking lagoons, perfect for swimming, fishing, snorkeling, and simply basking in the unparalleled beauty of nature.
Day to Day Life on a Catamaran
Each day on our catamaran adventure was a new opportunity for exploration and relaxation. Mornings started bright and early with coffee and a full breakfast, as we charted our course for the day. Our typical day included some morning work (yes, even in paradise), followed by hours of swimming and paddleboarding around the boat. Afternoons were reserved for exciting excursions, leisurely light-ish lunches on deck, backgammon battles, and sumptuous dinners under the starry Polynesian sky. Even with a phenomenal Polynesian sky to accompany our dinner the crew made the experience even more special with a tablescape decorated with a different theme each night. On two occasions, we even ventured off the boat for a taste of local dining.
Unforgettable Highlights
Our catamaran voyage was peppered with unforgettable moments. Here are some of the highlights that made our adventure truly exceptional:
The Coral Garden Swim: Guided by our ex-professional surfer captain, we embarked on a thrilling journey through a powerful current leading to a hidden coral garden. It was like stepping into a natural roller coaster ride, with coral formations and colorful fish swirling around us. At the end of our exhilarating journey, we shared coconut pieces with the friendly fish, creating a memory that will last a lifetime.
Dancing with Dolphins: Every night brought us to a different cove, and with it, a mesmerizing experience. Whenever we ventured into the open ocean, playful dolphins would join us, swimming alongside our catamaran. Their graceful acrobatics and joyful energy were a sight to behold, and we cherished every moment spent in their company.
Sharks and Sting Rays at Ta’a’ha Island: One evening, as we enjoyed a post-dinner stroll on deck, we were treated to an unexpected spectacle. The boat’s lights attracted a congregation of sharks and stingrays around us. It was both eerie and captivating to watch these majestic creatures glide through the dark waters, leaving us in awe of nature’s wonders.
Breadfruit Fries: Our onboard chef skillfully blended local flavors with familiar breakfast fare. One morning, she introduced us to a delightful surprise – Breadfruit fries. The crispy, golden slices were a revelation, adding a delicious twist to our morning meal.
Our adventure with Tahiti Yacht Charters was more than just a vacation; it was a journey into the heart of French Polynesian paradise. From the pristine waters and captivating marine life to the culinary delights and the camaraderie of our amazing crew, every moment was a testament to the magic of this tropical haven. We can’t wait to embark on another catamaran adventure, whether in French Polynesia or any other corner of the world. Until then, we’ll carry the memories of our Tahitian voyage with us, like treasured pearls from the deep blue sea.
